"Biscuit Run Tax Credit Transaction"
November 16, 2011 (press release) - The November 21 deadline for Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to file a responsive pleading to the suit filed against the State (demanding more money) by the sellers of Biscuit Run (Forest Lodge, LLC) is rapidly approaching. The Jefferson Area Tea Party (JATP) continues to be concerned about both the political and legal aspects of the Biscuit Run transaction.
JATP calls on George Allen campaign for retraction and apology for false claim of endorsement
The George Allen for U.S. Senate campaign issued a press release on November 22 claiming the endorsement of over 100 Tea Party activists and leaders throughout the Commonwealth. The release also stated that the "Virginia Tea Party Patriots" endorsed George Allen for election to the Senate. (See release here:
http://www.georgeallen.com/2011/11/6732/)
We have confirmed that a number of people identified in the release did not give an endorsement to George Allen. Among this group were two members of the JATP. Because each person's name had the name its Tea Party affiliation printed beneath it, we are concerned this could be misinterpreted as our direct or de-facto endorsement of George Allen. The JATP does not endorse political candidates.
Also, the press release was titled "Virginia Tea Party Patriots Endorse George Allen for U.S. Senate". The name the Allen campaign gave to the collective group is highly coincidental because it is name of the Virginia federation to which the JATP and over 40 other Tea Party groups belong as members. That federation is the Virginia Tea Party Patriots.
Numerous and repeated efforts by the JATP to get a retraction and a public apology from the George Allen campaign have failed to yield results. While the JATP name and the names of our two members have been deleted from the current online version of the release (still posted on the Allen campaign web site), this internal action by itself is unacceptable.
The JATP calls for a statement from the Allen campaign to include a retraction of all incorrect endorsements, a clarification about the Virginia Tea Party Patriots, and a public apology to our group and all others that have been adversely affected by this incident.
The JATP maintains its firm policy to not issue candidate endorsements. Instead, we choose to empower the voter with information about our core principles, provide education about the issues and access to the candidates, and encourage the voter to formulate his or her own opinion. We are justifiably dismayed at the confusion caused by the George Allen for U.S. Senate campaign, and we expect full and immediate action by them to set the record straight.
The DONT TREAD ON ME license plate metal prototype was approved for production.
The yellow is Gadsden yellow.....The snake is just as big as the one on our sample...(the biggest image they would allow....) The apostrophy was removed from Don't...The plate is now historically correct. (The 12yr old who made the original Gadsden Flag for her Dad during the Revolution made the mistake).
Expected delivery is April. The plate will then be available to the public at all DMV offices statewide. DMV will now begin processing the prepaid applications.

CALLING ALL CANDIDATES!
COME SPEAK TO THE JATP
Knowledge is power and the JATP advocates for an informed, engaged electorate. Beginning with our first election cycle in 2010, we have worked tirelessly to invite and coax candidates to speak at our meetings. We are proud of the solid reputation we have earned for non-partisanship, good organization, respectful discourse, and fair treatment of all.
Now that we have established our meetings as a desired platform for candidates, we will expect those seeking our votes to make the first approach to the JATP instead.
In this federal-election only year in the state of Virginia, all candidates who have qualified their name on a primary or general election ballot in Virginia for U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives (5th congressional district), and President of the United States may apply to speak at a JATP meeting.
We are currently accepting requests for Senate and House primary races only.
Candidates who wish to address the JATP should send a request via e-mail to
JATPcontact@aol.com as soon as possible. We will process requests in the order in which they are received and make our best effort to schedule everyone -- however, we cannot guarantee scheduling if an unworkable timing issue or some other extenuating circumstance exists.
The JATP hosts its general meetings on the fourth Thursday of each month from January through October from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The actual date and time of the candidate's appearance, amount of allotted speaking time, and other details will be discussed shortly following receipt of the request
We hope to see all of the candidates at a future JATP meeting!

LEARN THE BASICS OF
OPPOSITION RESEARCH
Opposition research is the foundation of winning political campaigns. Premised on the fact that the best predictor of how someone will behave in the future is how that person has behaved in similar situations in the past, good opposition research provides voters with the most useful information they could possibly have.
Unfortunately, too many local campaigns don't have the resources to pay for professional opposition research.
Terry Cooper, a nationally known opposition researcher for 30 years, wants to change that by developing a cadre of volunteer researchers who can spring to the aid of our local candidates.
To that end, Terry will be putting on one or more 1-1/2 hour workshops for people interested in becoming part of that cadre -- or just interested in learning more about opposition research.
